If you follow me on Snapchat, then you know that I stopped buying tangible gifts for my husband. For starters, he's a very difficult man to buy a gift for. Second, he's returned everything I've ever bought him in the last 4 years lol. So I have started to buy him "experiences", such as lunch on a daytime cruise, weekend getaway to Santa Barbara, wood working classes (his passion) and so on. On Feb.9, he turned 38 and it was time for a new "experience"; so I purchased a weekend getaway to Temecula. Not only did I book a last minute getaway, but most importantly, a hot air balloon ride! I was SO excited for this because I thought it would be beautiful, special and something he has never done before.
We made a weekend out of it because we had to be at the hot air balloon location 5:30 in the morning. There was no way we were driving out at 3am (about 2 hours away from where I live) but, we also love wine tasting, so we spent all of Saturday vineyard hopping and enjoying our time together. Comes Sunday morning, we wake up 4am, get ready and head out to the location. It was dark, foggy and not a soul in sight for a good 5 minutes (super freaky) until we got to the meet-up location. When everyone joining showed up, we got in a van and went to the actual flight location. Basically, the pilots had to test out the wind for speed and direction and just take all safety precautions before we headed up. At this point, the fog was still pretty heavy, so the pilots decided to test out another location about 20 minutes away. Once we got to the second location, the fog was even heavier and still not safe enough. Then we drove another 30 minutes away as they tested the wind and fog some more. After 2.5 hours of testing and driving around, it was a NO-GO! I couldn't believe it. They had a "Happy Birthday" banner they were going to put up on the basket, with champagne and cake as we all sang for him! My husbands birthday surprise was ruined. I was so upset and annoyed...but what are you gonna do? To get a better idea of what I was describing, see below pictures. Top picture is what it was supposed to look like...and bottom is what it actually looked like!
How sad does that look right? On a brighter note, it ended up being a beautiful day and they even served a little breakfast with mimosas. Champagne always makes things better right? lol. Anyways, not sure if we will go back because this was supposed to be for his birthday, but we'll see! If you do end up going, go more towards Spring or early Fall, it will be a beautiful morning. We stayed at Carter Estates, which had little bungalows you can rent out. We had a little living room, fireplace and a beautiful view of the vineyard. Of course, there was no grapes yet as it wasn't the season, but they did say they start growing it sometime in March.
Lucky for me, I had bought him another Birthday gift months ago! I had been dying to see Lara Fabian LIVE in concert for over a decade (ok fine I had a little selfishness with this gift). I'm not sure when she was here last, but I totally missed it. I found out she will be in LA and thought it would be a great gift since it was 2 days away from his Birthday and he's a fan of her too. So, we drove back from Temecula, spent some time with our Kat (whom we missed SO much), put her to sleep and headed out to the concert. I have to say, her concert wasn't what we expected. We are a huge fan of her french songs and she sang more of her english songs. She didn't sing my favorite song in the world, Caruso, which is BEST sung by her! And her outfit choices... were plain old confusing and unflattering. I expected her to come out barefoot, in her flowey dress with loose curly effortless hair. However, when she sang Je Suis Malade, Je T'aime and Adagio , it made it ALL worth it! She got a standing ovation for every one of her songs - the reason people came to see her. If you haven't heard of her...get ready to fall in love.
And that was the end of my husbands Bday weekend; at the end, it all worked out. I am so glad I had a backup plan! lol. However, father's day is creeping up slowly and I would love to hear some ideas from you guys! Leave a comment and share what experiences you recommend! Till next time, Xoxo.
