How I Keep my Hair Shiny and Healthy

Self-care is not just skin-care, it’s also haircare. Healthy hair screams “I take care of myself” - don’t you agree? Below are a few things I learned from years of being in the industry, being surrounded by hair stylists, always receiving new hair products and trying new things.

Step 1: The first step to my hair looking “right”, is my shampoo and conditioner. If I use the wrong products to wash my hair, no matter how I treat it after, it doesn’t look healthy. For my shampoo & conditioner I use custom ordered products from Function of Beauty. This company custom fills your formula based on a quick questionnaire on their page and is sent to you by mail. You can create yours based on your hair type and needs - its pretty awesome! Oh and they’re Vegan, cruelty-free, sustainable, healthy ingredients.

Step 2: At least once a week, I use the Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Reparative Hair Mask to hydrate & repair my hair. This stuff is amazing! I wash my hair twice a week so I often use it both times as a conditioner; however, find a hair mask that’s right for your hair type - mine is thick, coarse & frizzy.

Step 3: After washing my hair with shampoo & conditioner, I use the itsa10 Blow Dry Miracle Leave-in spray throughout my hair to detangle it. I cannot brush my hair without this & it smells good! This has been a ride or die hair product for me for years! Holy. Grail.

Step 4: Once I have applied the spray, I follow up with the Kerastase Resistance Resurfacing Strengthening Milk prep my hair for styling. I only use this from mid-end of my hair. In general, try to keep conditioning products away from your scalp.

In addition to my regular hair routine, I do a treatment called “Nanoplastica” that my friend Narine has brought in from Russia; it does wonders for coarse, thick, frizzy or dry hair. My hair doesn’t have natural shine anymore because I was blonde for several years and I naturally have frizzy hair. This treatment smooths out your hair, locks in shine and gives it the healthy finish we all crave. The treatment lasts for months, so I do it about twice a year;I am absolutely obsessed with it! Just keep in mind, it does strip your hair color, so do it before your next touch up.

To style:

I detangle my hair with the Mason Pearson brush, the bristles are soft and it doesn’t break your hair; its expensive, but definitely worth it. Then, I paddle brush my hair straight without touching the blowdryer on my hair using the FHI Detangling Brush . I then use a Ceramic round brush to smooth it out and curve the ends in. You can also finish off your hair with some type of oil (if needed) to give it that extra oomph of shine! I use the Elcie Cosmetics Glow Enhancer because its a dry oil and does not make my hair greasy!

Each of these hair products listed above have many different products for many different hair types, just like skincare. Research into which ones are right for you. Here are some of my tips:

  • Try not to over-process your hair; be patient with it when trying to lighten it.

  • Use hot tools only when needed

  • Stay away from thin hairbands unless styling, use scrunchies instead

  • Use a gentle microfibre towel like Aquis to prevent hair breakage

  • Opt for a silk pillow case, great for your hair and your skin
