Armenian "Khashlama"

“Khashlama” also known as “to boil” in Armenian, is basically a beef stew. This recipe is made in several different ways; but this is going to be the easiest one yet! My older sister makes delicious Armenian food, as she’s learned from my mom - but she modernizes the cooking style for todays busy lifestyle. She made this traditional food in a crock pot as she left for work and it was ready for dinner by night! I copied this dish from her and it took no more than 15 minutes to prep (of course, with already having the ingredients). Tasted absolutely delicious! Easy to make and ideal for guests as well. Here is what you’ll need:

  • beef chunks (bone in) - you can also replace with lamb

  • about 2 large tomatoes (sliced)

  • about 2-3 large potatoes (cut in large chunks)

  • about 2-3 bell peppers (cut longways)

  • 1 whole onion (sliced rounds)

  • salt, pepper, aleppo pepper (to add spice, you can skip)

  • cilantro

  • 1 bottle of beer

In your crockpot, start layering all of your ingredients: beef, onions, bell peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, salt, pepper, aleppo pepper and layer the same way the second time. At the end, pour in one whole bottle of beer (doesn’t matter which kind) and add some chopped cilantro and close the lid. I cooked on high for about 6 hours but I am going to assume it would be even more amazing if cooked on low, a little longer. Bon Apetit!

*Tip: pre-boil the beef just a little bit in salt water so it soaks up the salt flavor a bit and then add to pot.
